Jianzhen, also known as Ganjin in Japan, was a renowned Buddhist monk born in Yangzhou (in today's Jiangsu province) during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), in 688. He served as the abbot of Daming Temple in Yangzhou, where he was recognized for his profound knowledge of Buddhism and dedication to spreading Buddhist teachings. Voyage to Japan
In 742, Jianzhen was invited to Japan by an emissary to lecture and share Buddhist teachings. His journey was fraught with hardships. Jianzhen embarked on his voyage in 743 with his disciples, but after numerous attempts and shipwrecks, it took over a decade and six voyages before he successfully reached Japan in 754.
