Lishu, also known as the clerical or official script, is a significant style of Chinese calligraphy that emerged during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) and gained prominence during the Han Dynasty (206 BC- AD 220). Characterized by its straight strokes and angular forms, lishu played a crucial role in the standardization of Chinese writing. It is considered one of the five major script styles in Chinese calligraphy, alongside Seal Script, Regular Script, Running Script, and Cursive Script.
This script marks the transition from the more complex Seal Script (Zhuanshu) to the simpler Regular Script (Kaishu), making it easier to read and write, which facilitated administrative tasks in ancient China. Lishu is notable for its influence on the development of later script styles, serving as a bridge in the evolution of Chinese calligraphy.
