Shapotou
Shapotou
Introduction
Shapotou, located in Zhongwei, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, borders the Tengger Desert. Renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and effective desertification control, it blends natural beauty with cultural attractions, making a significant contribution to China's tourism.
The Shapotou scenic area, named after its sand dunes that once towered more than 100 meters, is a place where desert, mountain and oasis landscapes converge with the Yellow River. It now offers tourist activities such as sand surfing and desert racing, providing locals and tourists alike with unique experiences.
Geography and Environment
Shapotou stands at the intersection where the Yellow River gracefully traverses the vast Tengger Desert. This geographical uniqueness provides visitors with the rare sight of the yellow waters of the river juxtaposed against the golden sands of the desert. Over the years, concerted efforts have been made to control the encroachment of the desert, especially given its historical attempts to advance upon human settlements and infrastructures, such as the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway.
In 1958, groundbreaking desertification control efforts were initiated to protect this critical railway artery, which was threatened by the shifting sands of the Tengger Desert. The development of the straw checkerboard barriers was a pivotal innovation in these efforts, successfully pushing the desert back by 25 kilometers and preserving both the railway and the surrounding ecosystem.
