Overview
The Shichahai scenic area is home to the largest and best-preserved ancient district in Beijing. In the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), it became a residential area for high-ranking officials and intellectuals. After the Manchu conquest, the emperor's Pure Yellow Banner Troops were stationed here. In 1992, the Beijing government officially recognized it as a historic and cultural scenic area. It has since been known as Shichahai.
Attractions
Shichahai boasts a wealth of historical landmarks, including well-preserved hutongs, courtyards, mansions and gardens. The area's cultural heritage is rich, with temples, halls and former residences that are now historical sites, blending harmoniously with natural scenery and local customs. In recent years, trendy bars, cozy restaurants and boutique hotels have opened in the area's courtyards, adding a fashionable touch for visitors. The unique combination of tradition and modern appeal attracts around five million tourists annually.
Shichahai is surrounded by ten famous Taoist and Buddhist temples, as well as other historic temples. It also features several former royal mansions and gardens, including the renowned Prince Gong Mansion and Prince Chun Mansion. The lake's shores are lined with large trees, adding to the scenic beauty. Located near the north gate of Beihai Park, Shichahai offers activities for all seasons—boating in the summer and ice skating in the winter. In 1992, the Beijing municipal government declared it a Historical and Cultural Scenic District.
